Seed Germination using chlorinated water?
« on: January 22, 2014, 13:38 »
Hi

I know I'm posting loads at the moment...too excited by the new PT.

Just about to sow some pepper seeds in our DIY propagator and it occurred to me whether using chlorinated tap water would adversely affect seed germination.

Anyone?

TIA

Adri

Let it stand for a day before using. The chlorine will evaporate. It's better than rain water, which can contain the spores that cause damping off.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It's never occurred to me to let the water stand - and germination hasn't been unduly affected as far as I can tell!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Like Yorkie, I never use rainwater for the same reason.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I reckon she did!!

I must say I only ever let the water stand to let it get to room temp so the seedlings are not chilled. never thought about the chlorine

I know that Aunt Sally lets it stand, unless my memory's failed again.

I've never had problems with germination of most seeds, and always use tap water in the house, or rain water if in the greenhouse.
