Suggested layout / bed size
« on: January 12, 2014, 19:07 »
Just measured up the new allotment and it is 22m x 6m.
If you were starting with a blank canvas today, how would you lay it out?
Needs to be accessible for my 6 and 4 year olds!
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

It's like a half plot... Mine is x 2 of yours and I have a centre pathway and I grow off the pathway in sections / rows, each about 5mt long - not in made up beds as such. I do separate the different veg with scaffold planks so I dont have set laid out pathways in between.

So you have 2 choices. centre or edge pathway.. I reckon I would have a centre path and grow off that like I do now..

I would go the centre path down the middle of the 6m width for the 22m length and 12 x 1.2m wide beds either side and 580mm wide paths between.

My layout is similar but this year I am going with 1m wide beds.  I was unable to reach the 1.2m beds properly to weed and stuff.  I have membrane down between the beds.  I rotivate the crops so every so often the membrane comes up for the potatoes.  My beds are 5m long, which worked out fine for me.  I have a permanent path down the centre of wood chip covering membrane lined with bricks.
