I don't know as it is. I set mine up for chitting in a frost free greenhouse as soon as I get them. That was January 28th last year. It's not so much for chitting, but I find it's also the best way to store them. Given good light they can sit for months and still just have short sturdy chits.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Is your greenhouse

frost free
blackberryjam?

If it's just a cold greenhouse they will freeze and be useless, if we get any hard frosts.
DD keeps a heater going in his greenhouse to keep the temp above freezing

Yes I have a heater in there, only takes a minute to turn on if we have freezing temperatures.  ;)
But there be staying in the shed for a while anyway.

I bought a few rocket last weekend and put them to chit on spare bedroom windowsill. My intention is to eventually plant them in tubs in the polytunnel. I hope it's not too early but last year the chits hardly made any growth at all and I ended up planting them late ( outside) in about the same state as when I bought them. If this does work then I should be able to protect the indoor planted ones from frost ok. I hope.

They'll be fine there - frost and darkness are the only real no-no's, although they won't chit/store for as long if it's too warm (I finally chucked out my "spare" Lady Christl seed potatoes in August last year - they'd been on a North-facing window sill in a partly-heated bedroom since early January but were still alive and in plantable condition, albeit rather wizened!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

There is some who advocate that you do not need to chit them, perhaps we need to do a trial, although I think it has been done on various programmes. So no need to not plant if no chits spring forth, maybe they are shy & are waiting for soil >:(

There was a looong thread about the subject a few years ago- opinion seems to be that first earlies benefit from chitting.

Have a read if you have time  :D

Id like some advice on what to grow this year.  We don't really eat many salad type potatoes so want to grow some which are good for roasting.

Last year I bought Maris piper seed potatoes from Wilko and the slug damage was quite bad.  Can anyone recommend a good alternative?

I'd suggest going to a GC where they sell them loose so you can buy a few of each variety you want to try. Before you do, measure your potato area to see how many you need.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
