I'm pleased with my Sarpo Mira and Cara - no slugs, no blight and they store well.

Some aren't keen on the flavour and texture though. What do you like to eat?

There are some potato popularity polls here, they should give you some idea  :)

See if you can source a local supplier - you'll save loads on postage. Here's a starting point:

http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=49027.0

A lot depends on space. If you don't have a lot, I wouldn't recommend growing a lot for storing. These can be bought in bulk easily enough. If space is limited, grow a few first earlies, such as Lady Chrystl or Casablanca. These are expensive in the shops.

If you have the space I would recommend that you do not put all your spuds in one basket by growing just one variety. You may not like them and they might not like your ground!  As stated, look at the popularity polls. If space permits select a few first earlies, second earlies and maincrop.

It's only by trying a few across the spectrum over a few years that you will find which you like and which suit your growing conditions. No one can give you a hard and fast answer to your question as regards variety, but to advise re quantity - that's very difficult without knowing what space to have to devote to them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grew the following last year:
* Lady Crystl
* Charlotte
* Maris Piper
* Desiree
* Sharpo Mira

Next year I have reduced growing space so I'll be sticking to:
* Lady Crystl (I pre-ordered these from T&M on a free delivery weekend and with a £5 voucher so it didn't come to much)
* Charlotte
I will be growing these in containers (because that's what I will have available)

I had space I would grow desiree and sharpo mira again as the Maris Piper got badly damaged/eaten!

I have grown lady Crystl for several years now and they have never let me down.

My local stockist has ordered in over 70 varieties so I may be spoilt for choice this year.

Think it's to early, I'm not even chitting mine until the end of the month ,the only reason I bought them  this early was to use up my GC points.  :)

Problem is as it's not particularly cold at the moment, if they do start off, because of the lack of light you'll end up with spindly white chits.

True its not that cold at the moment, ill just have to keep checking on them, it's to early to start chitting isn't it. :(

I could put them in hubbys chill cabinet.
