Onions set planted upside down
« on: November 29, 2013, 13:13 »
Ok don't laugh, it was getting dark, did not have my specs on, back in October planted out winter set, yesterday notice some had shed there outer shell, leaving a single green stem, I then notice I had planted these upside down, wondering what I will get in late spring, will it be a onion?

Who else has done this not be afraid, confess

Not ideal but I'm sure they will do OK,bulbs have the ability to send the shoot up & the roots down whichever way up they are planted the same as seeds do. Watch a broad bean seed planted down the side of rolled up blotting paper in a jam jar a.k.a school experiments.

The set you planted will gradually shrink away as it's food store is used up. When it comes to swelling up time, it will swell the right way up!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The children planted some garlic upsidedown in the school garden - it looked a bit strange with roots coming out of the top of the compost and then going back down again  after putting a little soil over the exposed roots  I left them to sort themselves out  ;)

Even with my specs on I still get them the wrong way up. I don't worry, they'll find their own level  :)
