Am I a bad person?
« on: October 05, 2013, 21:52 »
As Steve and I walked the dog's around the village this evening.... I was looking out for shrubs, that I might like in my garden ( Even though I don't have a clue of most of their names)... When I saw something I liked, I pinched a small piece. Is that very bad of me?

Many years ago I used to get all my cuttings from the local zoo during the summer, outside and indoor plants. Naughty I know, but I did used to work there.

I have a beautiful pale pink fuschia bush in my front garden that I grew from a piece that 'fell' in my handbag whilst walking the dog round Ventnor Botanical Gardens. I don't think you're a bad person you're just helping to keep a species alive. :D

I regard it as my duty as a responsible citizen to occasionally remove protruding shoots from shrubs and plants which would otherwise be a potential safety hazard to passers by in public parks and gardens.  ::)  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

If it is National trust I have been known to do this too. ::)

But if it is someone's garden I will knock and ask, which often results in several cuttings, a tour of the garden and sometimes whole plants.

Those plants that propagate by seed rely on birds eating the fruit or the wind or animals carrying the seeds in their fur etc. Those plants that propagate by runners or suckers rely on the ground around them. Those plants that propagate as cuttings rely on people taking the cuttings so get out there and do your duty.
Didn't Darwin and all those victorian naturalists get famous by taking cuttings to bring home ????
R
p.s. why do you think the gardening term is "taking cuttings" ??????????????. I agree though, all joking aside, that getting permission is the proper way to do things.

No. I don't steal pieces of plant from anyone's garden.

I take photos of them and of their name label if they have one.
