compost activator
« on: October 05, 2013, 12:17 »
I have filled my plastic compost bin to the top with 16+ hanging baskets and some old pot plants, some kitchen waste but as this will be my first attempt of making my own compost, do you think I will need to buy some activator to place on the top?
Thanks all Reg

Pee will act as a good activator (I apply that daily, during the growing season, when I close up the greenhouse :) ).  Hopefully your compost heap is not in the middle of the village green?!

Strange you should say about pee as I was considering this and the good news my wife Pat will be supplying it but she asked me how often and I told her only once.

I'm not convinced the temperature is going to be warm enough for long enough to make it worth while adding bought activator at this stage of the season - though others may have experience of it doing some good in autumn?

It is also often said that lady wee doesn't have the right stuff in it to make a difference, but I've never tried that out either!

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Female human urine tends to be slightly more acidic than male, but urine pH varies throughout the day (and with diet) anyway, so I don't think it really matters, although it has to be said that the male version does benefit from the provision of a more practical dispensing nozzle.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
