Not sure if anyone can help, how to you know when walnuts are ready to harvest

That is usually a week after the rooks and squirrels have stolen them.

  There is one road T junction on a local housing estate where the rooks drop walnuts so the traffic can crush them ready for eating !

The husks start to turn a lighter shade of green before splitting and falling (I am told) My tree is far too big to consider picking them and I have yet to find out if any of them will be taken by thieves. We have jays here, and the woodpecker is partial, but everyone has at least one tree and they grow at the side of the roads too here in BG so plenty to go round. They have some significance in their culture and it is illegal to cut one down without permission.

At the moment the ones falling from our tree are the ones with black on them, with a bug inside. The rest aren't ready yet, but are starting to go pale. We will know when they are ready because the Gypsies will be knocking on the gate to see if they can have them. They will get a short answer, I am a veggie and will be needing them myself!
