Sprouts and leeks
« on: August 16, 2013, 20:21 »
Hi folks,
When can I plant sprouts and leeks out in the beds for spring produce. I have the sprouts  in 3 inch pots at present and the leeks spaced out in 6 inch pots? I have never grown either of these before so go steady on me please :-)

Thanks Mark

Dib 6 inch deep holes for the leeks about 8 inches apart with a hoe handle, or similar, and drop a leek in each hole. Do not fill in, just water the hole and the roots will be covered enough by the washed in soil. The leeks will enjoy filling the hole as they grow.

How big are your sprouts. They may be too late to produce a crop this winter.

I think my sprouts went in too late. sown as seed in March but not planted out till June. They are now about 9" tall but I'm not holding out much hope for a crop, or do you think they might produce by Spring ?
What is the ideal timing for sowing seed & planting out ?

Chris

I planted out my sprouts around April.

There are two ways of looking at your plants -- zero chance of sprouts in the pots
--- some chance if you get them in the ground  ;)

Give the ground a good feed of chicken manure pellets or similar, firm it well by tramping it down, dibble holes, fill with water, put in plants up to lower leaves and back fill with soil, push down firmly, and net to keep white butterflies from laying eggs on the leaves  :D
