fly trap
« on: August 13, 2013, 20:02 »
I was asked to post the pics of my 'not so smelly as the red cap fly trap' trap for anyone who might be having a fly problem.

Works out cheaper too.
I put about 2 cm of water in the bottle and add a couple of fish heads, or some fish skin and the blood from defrosting raw meat. It helps to rub the fish skin around the opening of the bottle, and to pur some of the meat juices on the opening too.

the best place for the trap seems to be on the ground in a sunny position. It does get a bit smelly after a few days but nothing like as bad as the stink from the traps that you buy.

I did make one of these and hung it up in the chickens run but that didn't work as well as the one I put on the ground, in the sun next to the run.

Thank you so much for posting that Mrs Bee, I have had to disinfect my wheelie bin after putting my red cap fly trap in three bin liners and it still managed to leak.

Oh, yuck!  This doesn't seem to leak.
It doesn't have that much water and I bung up the hole with kitchen roll.

I make these 'cos I can't stand the all invasive stench of the red cap traps. t rather defeats all my efforts at planting my garden for lots of scent.

The stench is really bad but they work brilliantly.  I always thought it was bad drains I could smell when on holiday in Spain but I now think it was probably red top traps as well.
