tayberry question
« on: August 04, 2013, 19:55 »
It seemed like I was going to have a really good Tayberry harvest. Lots of flowers, lots of bees and a fair showing of berries. They all seemed to come in a glut. Recently the wasps went for them in a big way, even making it difficult for me to pick the few which came after the initial glut. Now there are not many left and it seems like there are a lot of new shoots coming from the bottom for next years crop, I decided to whack off the old stuff and start training the new growth. I was suprised to find that there was a mass of new growth coming from last years old growth. Not just the stuff that bore fruit, but proper new growth with no signs of any flowers to come. Some of this new growth being several feeet in length, but definitely coming off last years main canes. I've never known it happen like this before, so does any expert berry grower know what has happened? The new canes coming from the ground look really fit and strong.

Sometimes existing canes do throw out additional growth like this, which then goes on the flower next year.

Personally I just do away with the whole lot and train in the new canes as you explained, as otherwise it all ends up in a tangle and harvesting becomes a challenge.

Shame about the wasp attack -- maybe be ready next year with a coupe of those fake paper nests hung over your canes as that should deter them a bit.

Hope all that helps a bit

Thanks for that SSB.

I think I shall limit the number of canes next year too. I got my best results when I only had two canes on the go, trained in a spiral on the trellis.

I've got three tatberry bushes ,they have almost finished fruiting also .

The canes from last year were about 15ft long ,loads of fruit off them.

There is new growth which is about 6ft long coming from around the base .

Once they have finished fruiting ,I will cut the old canes down to ground level, the new canes will be allowed to wind round the supporting wires.

Below is pictures in February these year (1st) then July , the netting was over the Tayberries as they ripened , but the birds went below and jumped up to them.

Some of my new growth from the base of the plant is about 12' long already. Others are only about 3'. I'm not worried about those. It's the fact that new growth (some about 6') was coming from the old canes before I cut them down. Never seen that before.

I must be pampering it too much. I gave it a good feed of potash this year. :)
