Chantenay carrots
« on: August 03, 2013, 09:46 »
I have just pulled a couple of carrots shown as Chantenay on the packet but they are normal carrot shape. Some mistake surely?or will they fatten up if left to grow on? They are about 6" long and about an inch diameter at the top. A typical tapering carrot shape.

Yours sound like Nantes, rather than Chantenay.
I wondered because, in my dry soil, Chantenay don't stay short either..........I have to grow the little round carrots for the grandchildren.
I think it's because they go down in search of moisture  ;)

I am beginning to wonder if the packet was labelled wrongly. Bought at Morrisons. All germinated well and look like being a good crop so I won't be short of carrots as I have my Nantes and Autumn King all going extremely well.

Perhaps its a case of pulling them at just the right time or they grow longer?  I think my chanteney's last year were a bit too long.  Still nice though!

You may be right GrannieAnnie. Bit like courgettes/marrows etc. anyway I will be trying them tonight with said marrow stuffed with my minced beef concoction. I'm sure they will be delicious.

Whatever variety they are, they will be much better and fresher than shop bought!  I've finished up all my older carrot seeds this year, so have about 8 different varieties!  There are some chanteney in there somewhere too!  ;) ;)
