That looks great, I agree  :) but unless you have a huge family, what is the point?

Is it just bragging rights  :D

They were planted middle of august last year.

most of them did not heart properly so that one was left to fully heart and that was the result.

as for a big family yes we do have one we got 3 kids 2 adults and 9 chickens  :)

MOS do you not love the fact that these huge cabbage can feed a family for a week. My reds usually get to this size almost by accident, i forget to look at them and then when i do they have taken over. I made 50 jars of pickled red cabbage from one plant, that i find is just comical and amazing especially when we grew it.

There is only the 2 of us in our house but we'd get through a cabbage of that size in a week.
I'd be bragging if I grew such a beautiful cabbage too :D

Are there some good cabbage recipes I don't know about as I have a lot growing (they are bigger than I realised!) and there is only 2 of us...

Generally I shred them into stirfrys or sometimes steam them but not so keen on that On a regular basis as it can be a bit bland. Red cabbage is ok as I can pickle it :)

Also, how long can I leave cabbages in the ground for?

Do you like coleslaw.................I make my own  ;) or fry them  with onions and bacon pieces a la delia or make bubble and squeak portions (these freeze quite well)  :)

If you leave the cabbage too long the hearts will split  :(

I had the same with my 'Spring' cabbage, just harvested one huge one last week and still a couple to go. Ironically the variety is called April ::) My spring sown Hispi were ready before any of the spring cabbage, don't think I'll bother again.

Some good ideas there, thanks. I will have to get googling :) They are only just starting to heart up so I have time - I am just trying to be ahead of the game so I have some answers before he starts to moan at me :)

Just like my OH does it. Miminal water is essential. I got a Red cabbage recipe from a Danish student where she did the same but used diluted blackcurrant cordial instead of just water. I tried freezing it and it was still as good. You can also add a bit of apple if needed.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
