Selling veg.
« on: July 10, 2013, 11:48 »
I'm thinking of selling eccess cucumbers and tomatoes. How much do you think I should charge?
I dont want to seem greedy but I want to charge a nominal amount just to cover the cost of seeds etc.

Check the supermarkets out and charge a proportion of that - say half or quarter.

Don't lose out by charging too little.  A packet of seeds may only cost say £1.50, but you've had to buy compost, you'd spent time looking after them and watering etc, so don't sell yourself short.

There aren't as many people round here selling stuff yet, so I've got nothing to go on to help out price wise.

Do you have farmers markets around you ?  That would be a good place to gauge prices.

If its from a council allotment you need to check your t and c's because we are strictly not allowed to sell on veg.  shame really especially when we get real gluts, would be good to cover seed costs as well as sharing

You can sell excess, as long as that's not the reason you've not grown an excess to sell.

Difficult to prove though!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for your helpfull answers. I am only thinking of selling them to work coleagues. They already buy eggs from me and are eager to buy any spare veg. I have. It's from my own garden so I'm hoping there's no problem.

It is enshrined in law:

But they soon have a lot to say if they dont think you are growing enough. Our town clerke stood at the side of my plot ten minutes after me sowing french beans direct and questioned why we had a bed empty. I told him they maybe fast growers but that was expecting miracles.  ::) all people working in positions dealing with plots should be made to work one for a year at least.
