Local Nursery selling ....

... trays of leeks about as thick as the point of yer average biro - £1.99 for 10. Are they extracting the urine or is it me that doesn't know something.

The attached chart on the vegetable stand says to plant leeks between March and May. Oh and there's a left over tub of leeks from earlier in the season, spring onions and lettuce - the last two being small and obviously newly grown.

I find this really frustrating.  Only been serious about growing veg for the last year or so and before that used to buy tomato plants from the GC not knowing that there was no way there was enough time to get a decent crop off it.  It would never have entered my head that they would sell plants that were not suitable for the time of year they were selling them.

I guess the problem is that people will buy them otherwise they wouldn't be there for sale.  It must put so many people off GYO though as they won't be very successful.

What really irritated me was that there was a chart by the stand saying that it wasn't the time of year to plant the veg  >:(

Hey ho - I only went for the last packet of garlic to plant tomorrow.

I put some baby leeks in around the beginning of September and cloche them over the winter. That gives them a head-start the following year and I get bigger leeks for harvest in the summer. I also sow some seed in the early spring to give all year crops. It is a bit late to plant baby leeks now tho
