Autumn raspberries dying
« on: July 06, 2013, 13:23 »
Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but my autumn raspberries have started to die back, ie yellow/brown leaves etc. Have noticed the same is happening to a few other plotholders too. Any ideas what is causing this (is it the crazy weather)? And if there is any cure?  ???

Several of mine did it earlier this year.  They haven't actually died but they look very sick.  Not an expert so no idea why.  I just keep feeding and watering and crossing my fingers!

quite pleased I've worked out how to post a photo! this is one of my raspberries, they only went in this year, but I have seen other people's mature plants having the same problem too.

Do  the canes themselves look damaged or only the leaves?

Its hard to say, the canes don't look substantially different to healthy versions, maybe a bit drier?

I was wondering about cane blight, but if the canes themselves look okay, probably not.

What type of soil?  Raspberries hate clay.  I had to add loads of manure and compost to mine and I lost one even then.

Water shortage may be all that is wrong. Need to keep newly planted raspberries well watered during their first Summer.

great points thanks, we are on clay, although we dug a lot of manure into the raspberry bed. I will inspect the canes for viruses and water more and see what happens!

There is only one cane in the picture so I assume it was transplanted recently.

If this is the case was it transplanted while dormant or was it growing ?

It was planted this spring, so still quite new, but 2 others planted at the same time are fine. I checked the cane btw and no sign of viruses or anything so have just given it a big water

Spring is a bit late for planting so they are quite luck to have survived.  Give them plenty of water.

In the picture they have lots of Nasturtiums growing around them.  This will cause a lot of competition and is not a good idea.

Expect losses, especially at the time you transplanted them.

The test of whether they were successful will come next spring when they throw up new growth. The raspberries you're getting are on last year's growth, which should have been cut down entirely.

And as Aunt Sally says, they may look pretty, but clear out the competition!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
