Grow Brassicas in Pots...
« on: May 21, 2013, 13:46 »
Hi All

Well my garden is portable... few raised beds, bags of spuds and mostly big pots!
Question is can I grow a single cauli/cabbage/broccoli/brussell in each 14" by 12" deep container?

I have lots... trust me!!!

Mattie

Yes, you can grow them one per container. But, you might have a difficult problem keeping cabbage butterflies from laying their eggs and hatching the dreaded looper that will wipe out your crop. Pigeons often show great interested in brassicas as well.

If possible, consider setting the pots of brassicas in some sort of mini netted hoop house or enclosure. I've seen 2 stretched out metal coat hangers set into the sides of a pot like an X and netting placed over that.

A piece of fine net curtain would do the trick Mattie... :)

Next week I'm off to the fabric shop to purchase either some craft netting or bridal tulle (cheapest they have) to hoop over my brassicas. I never find net curtains at the charity shops as some silly people buy them to hang in their windows  ;)  The fabric should last about 3 years on average before it needs replacing.
