Moles
« on: May 19, 2013, 15:48 »
So, while down at the plot today I noticed 3 mole mounds towards the back of my plot, very close together. I am still in the process of clearing and weeding that area of the plot so it doesn't really bother me for now but obviously I don't want them to encroach upon the areas where I have something planted. Any tips for keeping them away?

A sonic scarer, or trapping.

Mmm I don't want to injure them so trapping is out. Looks like I will have to just wait and see how often this happens

We have a sonic scarer in the garden and it's reasonably effective. We do resort to trapping too, if they get too persistent.

They used to drive me loopy in our garden in rural Cambs- try kids windmills! I'm not joking, you stick em in the mounds and the vibes scare the little * off (and will be a talking point on the lottie  :D).  I did try trapping before that but forgot to check the trap and found a dead'un.  Was deeply traumatised for ages.

I have seen people with kids windmills on the plot and always assumed they were for the birds but wondered why they were in random places - maybe that is why!

This might sound daft but are you sure they are moles that make the heaps?  We get heaps too, all over the place but ours are made by voles.

The soil is rough and lumpy and not like the nice stuff moles leave you

If it is moles, perhaps you can collect up the soil as it makes lovely potting compost  :D :D

We had a mole problem earlier this year, I put citronella joss sticks into the run (unlit) that seemed to do the trick.

ooh. modded! I didn't call them a *  ::)
yes- the molehill dirt is great for potting, apart from when you have loads and you're trying to mow over the bumps

Definitely moles - I was actually amazed what a good job it had done with my heavy clay tupe soil and how fine it was!

Some good points then  :lol:

I like the citronella joss stick idea and I shall try it to deter the dreaded voles

It is starting to look like vole city on my plot and after last year's losses I really really want them to leave  ??? :blink:

I will just monitor it this year and see how much of a problem it becomes. If it gets too bad I will try the citronella idea as well. Thanks!
