Moles... how to get rid of them
« on: May 17, 2007, 08:46 »
We have a mole problem, still can´t find the criter. Neighbour took me to the shops and I came back with warfarine based stuff, which I have not used, it is in a sealed container waiting for me to find where I can get rid of it safely! (got a dog and a pup so don´t want to go down the deadly poison route)
I´ve tried digging up the tunnel it has made but can´t find the mole. Any suggestions?

My in laws have huge problems with moles but last year they put prickly stuff like holly in the tunnels and the moles didn't tend to bother them after that. They also sink shopping baskets into the ground, followed by a bumper crop of root crops. I believe the baskets were the plastic type that Asda use.
Try my best to be Organic but don't always make it

I used to have a problem living near fields full of moles! I now use a battery powered mole repeller (also known as a sonic spike or sonic mole and gopher chaser).  It seems to work really well.  As moles have very poor eyesight and sensitive hearing, the noise that emits from it every 15-30 seconds drives the moles nuts and they vacate the area.  I move mine round the garden every few weeks and it seems to prevent them coming onto my patch!  Its a good way of getting rid of moles without killing them as long as you remember to renew the batteries every few months or so.  Not sure where you'd get them in Spain though.  This site explains a bit more about them:
http://www.primrose-london.co.uk/battery-powered-mole-repeller-p-279.html - sorry i'm not sure how to put a link in properly :?

It's also supposed to repel rabbits although I haven't tested it on them :)   Not sure I'd risk it if I had pet bunnies.

My mum used to use moth balls :tongue2: !!  But they are difficult to find now.  :?

Childrens windmills that you can buy at the beach ... make similar wirring sounds and scare off the birds too when you have to re-sead the lawn !! :D   Looks pretty too

My grandad used to cycle round looking for molehills so he could use the soil they had excavated...he believed it was the best potting compost available...and he was a prizewinning gardener.

 :D
If life gives you lemons...wrap a dog turd in newspaper and set fire to it on Life's doorstep.

I've done the same thing myself (collecting, that is, not the cycling bit)

well if you have moles look on the bright side, you have good soil
you can still get those traps that you bury in the hole,it just means digging your lawn up to set them so you might cause more of a mess than the moles.
they only show there heads in the afternoon sun, they like to sunbathe in the sun  so you need to sit there with an air rifle and a hip flask
feed the soil not the plants
organicish
you learn gardening by making mistakes

cut off the bases from plastic bottles ,wedge in the ground, neck uppermost.  when the wind blows over the bottle top it resonates the air inside and bingo, your homemade sonic mole repellent.
When the sun shines i dig,
When rain pours i dig
When the wind blows---I SURF.
