New allotment help
« on: May 18, 2013, 00:51 »
Hello

First post so please be kind.

I recently just took over an allotment that was covered in brambles, its a 10pole plot and as things stand I have probably got rid of about 3/4 of them (I have just cut them back not dug them up).

I now want to try to concentrate on a section I have cut back already to try and get some potatoes planted, so here is my question: how do I go about this? Do I dig up the roots of the brambles and then use my tiller to turn the soil over, or do I turn it all over by spade and then use the tiller? I would love to jus use the tiller to turn it over but I want to do it properly.

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

Hi Wizzywig,

You've got to dig the roots out...or you'll finish up with a new crop of brambles... :(

Hi wizzywig27
I agree with capt zero and m1ckz, digging the roots out is best I had some on my plot when I first took mine over,
it's hard work but worth it.

Welcome to the forum  :)

And another vote for digging!  :)

The roots often look like an octopus, and they burn really well  :D

Watch they don't re-root, I know we had someone do this and they set roots down where they lay.  ???

Yes, if you strim down, you need to wait a week or two for the weeds to resprout before applying glyphosate.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
