beans straight into ground
« on: May 18, 2013, 18:14 »
I want to plant runner beans and broad beans straight into the ground in situ. Do i need to protect them? Or should I put cloches over them until they come up? I was thinking along the lines of plastic milk bottles with base cut out. Any thoughts?

Thanks lilac and grendel - I'll cover the runners then but leave the broad beans. Hope it's drier tomorrow to get out to plant them!

I am putting mine out this week, once i've bought enough rabbit protection. It's been too frosty to do it until now. My dad ( also an allotment holder down south) says he's just putting his broad beans out too. I trust him, as he is a broad bean obsessive, and also fights the good fight against a battalion of wood pigeons.

I sowed two lots of runner beans around May bank holiday, one dozen seeds in polytunnel and about two dozen straight into the ground outside. Beans in poly sprouted a week ago, now about 3" tall. Those outside are just popping up. Last couple of week's weather was atrocious, cold and damp, so its no wonder those in the polytunnel performed better. However I am reliably informed by old hands at the lottie that beans will catch up. Many won't sow until first week of June! I am just being very impatient, I suppose!

As for broad beans, I sowed mine late October last year. Aquadulce and Bunyard Exhibition. Both now about two feet tall and flowering like there's no tomorrow! No sign of pods yet, though.
