what time to put squash outside
« on: May 01, 2013, 21:06 »
I've got my squash and Courgettes growing in the greenhouse.  Would it be okay to put them outside now.  Going to grow them on top of builders bag full of compost.  I live in the south east.

I am going to start mine on the weekend but if they were through I would not put them out yet without protection still freezing in the nights here.

I'm in littlehampton on south coast and its still been getting very close to freezing at night.

2 degrees tonight according to met office.

Middle of way without protection, even later if frosts still possible.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

One frost and they're toast. I won't even be sowing mine for at least a week.

I always leave mine until end of May - even though I am also on the South Coast.  They are usually in 12 inch pots by then and some have flowers on them!  I did this last year and am glad I did - the other plotholders put theirs in, lured by the warm weather, and then we had a cold snap and the squashes sulked, with many being eaten by slugs and never recovering.
Read about my allotment exploits at Ecodolly at plots 37 & 39.  Questions, queries and comments are appreciated at Comment on Ecodolly's exploits on plots 37 & 39

End of May for me too. Only 3 of us on my field waited last year, we were the only ones with courgettes and squash..

3 years ago I would have said 3rd or last week of May around here, but there have been early June frosts (or very near misses) in the last couple of years, so I will be carefully scanning the weather forecasts and then crossing everything when I finally take the plunge this year.

At the moment all the tender crops destined for outdoors are still in their packets, but not for much longer!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Mine are still in the packets.  I lost my entire crop of courgettes, squashes and beans one year on the weekend of the 4th and 5th June  :(  I haven't made the same mistake again. It's a hard lesson to learn after you've tended those delicate babies for weeks. Sigh

Check online your last projected frost date for your postcode. Metcheck I think it's called

There's this

but it seems very over optimistic to me

It's already wrong for this year isn't it Mum!

I've tried the "gardenaction.co.uk" one and I can't get it to work at all (possibly just as well!)

not that one looks as if it's been taken over by advertising, and won't let you set your dates
Ring any bells?

It's definitely changed a lot since I last looked at it, which is a shame as I always thought it was one of the better ones for gardening info.  :(

Doesn't seem to be any way of registering to access the feature so it's a bit of mystery to me.

In the past I've usually been so busy getting lots of other stuff done that before I know it, it is the 2nd or start of the 3rd week of June when I tell myself that I just HAVE to plant the squash plants that weekend    As it seemed to work well, it's become traditional to plant them then  :D
