Yes, it is too late to expect more than a couple of fruit per plant. At the risk of appearing to have an unhealthy obsession with the sex life of squashes make sure that the fruits you are keeping have been pollinated; they have a nasty habit of starting to swell very encouragingly and then dropping/rotting off if not pollinated.

Once they get to about 3 inches across they should be OK (take off the remains of the flower to reduce the chance of blossom end-rot)

I was wondering why I was getting some fruits that seemed to be going well, then just rotting - perhaps this is the answer, thanks Jay! Is it the same for pumpkins as for squashes?
Will get busy with a paintbrush next year.

Yes, also courgettes (although a courgette 3 inches across is a small marrow!  )
