Rabbits
« on: April 27, 2013, 22:16 »
There are rabbits on my allotment. Does anyone know what I need to do to keep themoff my plot? Are there particular things they go for or is anything game? I just planted onions, potatoes and radish so far.

We are surrounded by them also.  I think the only thing you can do is put fencing up around your plot.

Most of the plots don't have fences and I think it sounds like a huge job to put one up. If I put netting round vulnerable plants will they go looking for other things witout netting or will that not matter? What's the psychology of rabbits?   ;)

The phsycology is 'eat'. You will find some plots have no trouble, and others (mine) have endless issues. The only way to really be sure is to fence - I think even using snow fencing keeps them off for the most part. They wont normally dig under debris netting for example even if not dug into the ground.

We ended up fencing ours and it is q big job, it wasn't to stop rabbits but instead badgers. Now we are starting to re-fence with half rounds rammed into the ground 2 and a half foot. Touch wood seems to have worked so far.

Ps maybe we could trade our badgers for rabbits.

Hello there,

I've also got rabbits and planted spuds, garlic, onions and shallots in raised beds have so far been left alone. I doubt they will leave alone anything green so I am growing at home whilst I acquire some chicken wire (which the other plot holders use to keep the rabbits out with success).

Good luck!

Rabbits do not usually trouble potatoes, onions, broad beans.

What other crops do they not like?

Seriously though, I think fencing is your best option. The little beggars nipped the tops off all my onions when I had my first plot and hadn't gotten around to putting my fence up.
It's heartbreaking when you put so much effort into growing your veg only to have it eaten :(

I know it sounds obvious but just make sure that you fence to keep them out and not in! And make sure there is no sneaky rabbit hole within the fenced area.

We had an issue once where we had to fence round a large area and the contractor inadvertently ended up fencing the rabbits in so they couldn't get out - the plants were decimated but the rabbits then starved - not good all round  :(
