I had to leave my bed of well established asparagus when I gave up the other plot  so last year grew some from seed.  I planted them out in a nursery bed in October and have been anxiously looking out for signs of life this past couple of weeks when .... first one, two, and in a space of 24 hours, the rest of the 12 plants have all thrown up a baby spear     I'm so excited and pleased - growing from seed was remarkably easy and so much cheaper than buying crowns.  Now, just have to wait a couple more years or so

There are lots of different varieties available sold as seed 

Out of all the things you can grow. I think growing asparagus from seed, must be the most rewarding.

The other thing is that you can grow a lot more plants and then be able to use some of them to be able to cover and blanch (like forced rhubarb) which are supposed to be a lot more tender and sweet - I've never tried myself so I'm keen to give it a try when the crowns are mature.
