Daft question about planting Spuds.
« on: April 08, 2013, 10:12 »
Please don't laugh out loud at this question please, as I am stilll a bit new to all this. I have got 4 lots of spuds, 1st early's 2nd earlys, salad and main crop.  The question is do I plant all at the same time or do I stagger them by say a week at a time? I will hopefully be putting the 1st one's in this week.
Any help would be helpful.
Thanks Ste.

Throw them all in at the same time.  Early/Second/Late relates to how long they stay in the ground, rather than when you should plant them.

Give some thought to what happens after the potatoes. Earlies crop after 10 weeks, 2nd earlies after 13wks and main crop after 16 wks. You should be lifting the early crop in late June, which will free up land for your winter brassicas. So if you put the earlies next to the border your sprouts and PSB will not interfere with your digging.

P.S. There is no such thing as a daft question.

plant them all at the same timr, if you got the time.if not plant them in order..1st earlies first etc, as then you should have the earliest ready a couple of weeks before the 2nd earlies and so on

I usually do then about 12-15 inches apart. I don't know about rows though? Maybe 2 foot.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Also it depends on the type.

Earlies are more like 12 inches apart and main top nearer 15 inches.

Early rows are about 2 foot apart, main crop nearer 3 foot.

1st Earlies - 12"
2nd Earlies - 15"
Maincrop - 18"

24" between rows.

Simples!

I've got a 300m2 plot.

Mrs. Digger's is a bit bigger than mine, but she's so generous, she allows me to cultivate it!
