how deep do spuds go?
« on: April 01, 2013, 11:49 »
Ive got the week off work so hope to get spuds in, 1st & 2nd earlies.
I read here somewhere that its best to plant them deeper considering the weather.
How deep should they go?
Thanks

mine are mostly in, generally 4-6" deep, and as the tops come up I will be banking them up a fair bit higher.

I put mine in 6inches deep and when they start popping through they probably end up with another 4 -5 inches on top again, plenty deep enough, they wont be through for about 4-5 weeks anyway and by that time the weather will have warmed up a bit anyway.

Last year I planted ten 10 ins deep, then earthed them up a further 6-8 inches

Worked just fine  :)

I planted some spuds really deep one year, - around 12", to see what happened.

It didn't make any real difference - the plants still seemed to come up around the same time and the potatoes produced were all at the same level in the soil as usual.

So I'm not sure if planting deep and early makes any odds.

I'm waiting 'til it warms up a bit.

Interesting John.......that they come up at the same time when planted that deep, maybe they grow quicker if they got further to travel  :)

If that is true then a little deeper to retain the warmth, I guess.

Not too deep of you'll be digging til Christmas :)

Yes maybe.  :D

Then again, bearing in mind my poor memory, perhaps they took a bit longer. The thing I'm really sure about is that the spuds all appeared at the level in the soil that you'd expect them to be. Clever things them little tatties.  :tongue2:

You never know. No one can say for certain, but there comes a time when you have to bite the bullet.

You can wait and wait - only for June frosts to get them!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I would think they'll be fine.

It's going to be 16 degrees in 2 weeks according to accuweather.

Tropical lol

I'll put mine in next weekend. About 8" I reckon... Matron, the screens!
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
