The how reflective a material is is termed its "Albedo". Aluminium foil tops most lists as up to 95%, so I've been correct in saying that using this method nearly doubles the amount of light your plants get.

Best I get some tin foil in then  ;)

If it didn't work, I don't think I'd have been using it for the past 40 years!

I certainly wouldn't have recommended it if it didn't!

Good stuff, I wasn't dismissing your advice DD, I just wanted to know if it was worth me getting some before my wife thought I was mad :)
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

You can get some and show her this thread by way of explanation.

It won't help though. She'll still think you're mad!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm trying it for the first time this year and it seems to be working, at least the plants aren't all trying to lean out of the window :D

Another stupid question, sorry.

But how exactly do you do it, and where do you situate the foil?

Do you wrap it around the top of each pot, in a circular fashion?

Anyone that has easily accessible pictures?

The foil goes behind the plant so that the plant is in between it and the source of light, (the window!).

I tend to just stick mine underneath the pot/tray then bend it upwards. With a strategic nip and tuck it's self-supporting.

You can foil line a box with the front cut off and stand several pots in it, rather than do each individually,

Brian thought I was mad when I wrapped the tin foil round the seed tray.

I have 12 small pots in a seed tray that has no holes in the bottom.  Like DD said, the foil tucks under the tray at the back, than fold it round the sid and a few nips and tucks and it stands up by itself!  So just one piece of foil between 12 pots!

I have done some detailed research on behalf of this forum, and the result I came up with was that Milk Tray boxes are the best for the job!
No matter how many plants I have in my garden, I can always find room for one more.

Foil shoved under the container and just bent up:
