Am I the only one who's put out seeds?
« on: March 23, 2013, 10:33 »
Looking at a lot of the posts I think I might be  . In my enthusiasm to escape my in-laws Albert and I have been down the allotment nearly every day this week come rain or shine. I sowed radish, early lettuce, spring onion and early beetroot seeds and I built a structure for my peas (when I sow them). Although when your allotment is on a slope, stepping back to admire your handiwork is not recommended. After roly-polying down to the pram Albert and The Swamp Thing went home

This fool sowed carrots direct into the ground last weekend, they've probably rotted away already.  I've also had shallots in for a couple of weeks.. :tongue2:

I planted shallots about 2 weeks ago - I'm not unduly worried ...  :nowink:  Only seed I've sown are currently indoors but most of the seed box is very much intact.

Not a thing sown outside at the plot. Too cold for them to germinate imho  ???

Broad beans went in the ground two weeks ago. Brassicas are in the coldframe with beetroot.
Everything else can wait a couple of weeks now.

Personally I agree with Sunshine and think seed will probably sit too cold and wet outside at the moment, but it depends how well drained your soil is.  Wait and see Parsley, if no show then lesson learned and its not the end of the world to re-sow  :)

Shallots are pretty tough and as long as they are not totally waterlogged, should be OK, Benandbill :)

Broad beans have been in since late January, and is keeping some sullen chard and broccoli company on the plot. Garlic's out and doing ok, but everything else is indoors. I've got near-horizontal sleet coming down here at the moment. Am not tempted to go out to the plot!

I put in garlic bulbs a couple weeks ago which ate poking through and yesterday planted some strawberries in a raised bed. I'm glad I put fleece over them :) the plan was to sort the bean beds today but that's been ko'd by the snow... ::)

I sowed some nantes carrots and a row of beetroot on the plot. Not sure what's going on with them. I've not had the chance to check since I sowed them, I keep getting rained and snowed off, but I'm not particularly hopeful ::)

It's just so unpredictable at the moment, but according to www.accuweather.com there is light at the end of the tunnel and temps are meant to go above double figures and stay there from about 3rd April onwards.....

So the growing season begins shortly.....
