Sick hen
« on: March 21, 2013, 03:01 »
I am away at the moment, my wife is looking after my hens, she has sent me an email about one of them, it seems to have the 'runs' (its very runny and there is a lot of it) has anyone any suggestions on what I can tell her to buy to help cure it ?
thanks
It's all about the journey, not the destination

Give her some garlic or if u have apple cider vinegar. Garlic is bery good for them. When its really cold or if my chooks get cold i boil the eggs and just feed them 1 each every other day for few days it works.

How do you give a hen garlic ?
I think I can get the apple vinegar though, I have a 3 liter water bottle for them, how much would I use ?

You can put garlic in the water. I put in a couple of cloves sliced in half. Given the chance they would and have picked it out and eaten it.

Have they been wormed recently

You want the unrefined apple vinegar not the stuff you get in the supermarket. You should be able to get it from shops that sell horse feed. :)

Are they free ranging in the garden at the moment or within the last week, if not has she given them any greens within the last 2 days.
Is the hen hunched up or staying by herself. Is she still laying.

I would advise to cut out all treats and just feed them on their pellets which is a balanced diet for them.  They tend to fill up on things that have little to no benefit to their diet.   ;)

You can add boiled water to the pellets as a porridge on a cold day.

I think joyfull is referring to it being illegal to feed poultry anything that has been in your kitchen.  You would have to store and then cook the rice away from your kitchen to stay within the law.

yeah right, like that is going to happen, my wife cooks rice, she does extra, what we dont eat, they do, its all done in a pressure cooker, put on a plate and their bowl, they might even get any leftovers we dont eat,

The same as the porridge, do a bit extra, they get some, we get some ;)

It's not as if we are eating from the hens feeding bowl, we have our own plates :)

still like to know who says its against the law though

I suppose I could make a fire in the garden, cook the rice just for them, then ask them how they would like it served (as if) :) :) :)
