Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They are wonderful things leeks. You just have to be a little bit patient with them...... and that's the hard bit in my case.

My 4 rows of 100 are almost gone :( and now I am watching peering at the seed tray waiting for the replacements to appear. Cold greenhouse for mine too... I just wish they'd put in an appearance soon.

But... the large pot full in the heated conservatory are on their way.... signs of green shoots  so the others shouldn't be too far behind even if I'm late with them this year.

Patience is a virture....  ;)

100?! That makes my efforts seem very poor!! I've only sown about 30 but I haven't got that much space in my bed. Maybe I'll sacrifice something else.

The packet said to scatter lightly. Is 4-5 seeds per 9" pot about right or too few?

Where abouts are you, PP?

I said last night "I must remember to get a cat litter tray when I go into town at the weekend." She looked at me, then the dog, then back at me, rolled her eyes, shook her head and went back to watching Eastenders :D

I settled for a plastic family circle biscuit tin in the end, so as not to confuse the dog so much, and to save myself three quid :D

I was a bit impatient and started my leeks ages ago. This is how they look now:

I reckon these will be no good and I'll need to start a new batch. Must learn patience!  :nowink:

Leeks are more tolerant than a lot of other seedlings.

You may be OK with those, but I'd start to think about hardening them off and getting them out of the warm house. They're cold weather plants.

Half a packet of Kings Seeds per cat-litter tray (If only I knew how many that was it'd be useful....maybe 150). They  grow like grass but there's enough space for them to thicken up most years.

Me too!

Planted Musselburgh variety today using seed tapes - the seeds are encased in what I would describe as narrow, thin lengths of toilet tissue type material, each seed spaced at about 1" intervals.

Anyone else used these? It certainly beats trying to fiddle with tiny seeds and spacing them out!

My first sowings are up OK and have enough space in cat trays to grow on until they get planted out around mid June

I'll sow some more this week, but in a pot this time (all trays now taken  ) as we get through a lot of leeks  ;)
