hen leaking from bum please help
« on: March 17, 2013, 19:54 »
 :(
please help.
2 days ago my hen flew off the top of the chicken coup because tasty treats had just been put down for the girls. she flew right into me and dropped to the ground and ran away grumbling and rosey. i checked her and she just seemed shook up.
yesterday her bum was really messy and bleeding. when i checked the internet, her symptoms seemed to fit with her getting a fright and the diagnosis was a prolapse.
i separated her immediately and cleaned her, pushed her back in  and applied large amounts of vaseline and anusol like it said.
she is still interested in food and water, but she is leaking constantly a thick clear fluid (like uncooked egg white) and she smells really bad.
i am very worried and would love someone to give me some advise please.
thank you
debra
Cheers
Debra ;)

Hi Debra, it sounds like she has a broken egg inside her.  A warm bath for around half an hour should help her to try and pass the broken egg and shell.  Gently towel her dry afterwards finishing off with a cool hairdryer.  You can repeat the bath tomorrow.  Do keep an eye out for any other symptoms and consult a poultry friendly vet if you think she is suffering at all.

thank you
yes i did wonder about that. she is now having a bath and a snooze.
when i picked her out of the cage she is in, the fluid is nearly white, and her bum lookes really sore.
i have only had my girls just over a year and haven't experienced any ailments so i am nervous incase i am doing the wrong thing.
thanks for the advise :)

As the discharge smells it may be infected. She  may need a vet and antibiotics :(

I agree with Sassy.  It sounds like she is unable to lay her eggs and they are breaking inside her which can cause egg peritonitis.   :(

How have you got on. If it is egg peritonitis it can be fatal! Don't wish to alarm you but it is serious. :(

 :)
Hi all

took Henry to the vets as she was very uncomfortable. It was a prolapse and the vet seemed to think it could maybe be caused by her laying large eggs. She put back the prolapse and by the time we got home it had popped back out. So the next day the vet knocked her out and pushed it back in and stitched her vent up so there was only a small gap to poo from.
she stayed in a dark corner of my living room quite happily for 4 days being spolt, then i took her back and the vet removed her stitches. So far so good. The prolapse has stayed in, but the vet said that unfortunately it could happen again so my fingers and toes are crossed.
Henry is now reunited back in with the flock to her annoyance, as i think she preferred the warmth of my living room as she keeps bolting for the door as soon as it is open to escape this horrible cold weather. poor thing  ::)

oh dear
 :(
this morning i noticed Henry standing to one side out of the way, and sure enough the prolapse has happened again. This time it is not as protruding as the last time.
I have put it back in and bathed her in warm water. She is now in the kitchen under a dark blanket.
I am not sure of what the outcome will be for poor Henry.
Have any of you had anything like this before and does it keep happening?

thanks
Debra

I have read that people put sugar on the prolapse to shrink it so maybe that is worth a try.

Make sure she doesn't overheat in the kitchen.   ;)

ok I will give it a try.

she is now moalting too and is rather bald, so I think she is ok for now out of the cold.
Its just started snowing here in Newcastle although it is not lying.
She probably did it on purpose
Thank you for all your advice. It is very much appreciated  :)

We have sunshine but it is starting to cloud over a bit.  Hope we don't get the snow.

Good luck with Henry.   :)
