Cucumbers..grow up!
« on: March 02, 2013, 21:12 »
Looking at growing cucumbers on the plot. Tried them before on the ground but they rotted so going to try to grow upwards. Any thoughts on trellis/fence height and type? Anyone had any success or failure tips?

Have had success with cukes once - last year - with outdoor cukes grown indoors - got 4 fruits from 4 plants!!
That is a success to me! :D

They definitely need help growing upwards - I had a bamboo framework stood in their pots.

I have used chicken wire in the past with short canes thread through the holes to hold the frame up, but last year in my greenhouse I used an old metal rabbit run fence and tied the cucumbers to it with their own tendrils, and just a couple of bits of string.

Only had 2 plants survive, but got over 20 cucumbers from them.

Was thinking of chicken wire- what height did they get to?

I did my chicken wire in a U shape.  The wire I had then was only 3ft high, so they grew to the top, then I trained them all along the U.

So I never knew which plant the cucumbers had come from!

I grew mine last year up a pallet which was supported one end by a couple of stakes driven into the bed so the pallet was on a slope - helped the fruit to ripen as the pallet was positioned facing the sun.

I grew mine up wire mesh on bamboo canes - 7 plants got to 5ft+ outside, despite being late sowing. None died. None. Can you hear the quiet pride in my voice...?!  :D

outdoor cukes grown indoors

This is what we have done a few times and with a good degree of success, with Marketmore.. Trying a new variety this year, also indoors. :)

My cukes share my Munty frame (check search) with the runner beans and all seem very happy together. I get lovely straight cukes since they hang down from the lines. I used poly baler twine on mine and get almost 3 years of use before they need changing. While jute is natural, it rots before the season even finishes  >:(

Trillium, I'd like to grow cucs but new to veggie growing. Do they climb themselves, or do they need securing up the frame?
