What grows ok on wet boggy ground?
« on: February 22, 2013, 15:12 »
Hi there it will be my first spring/summer on my allotment.  The site is prone to flooding (I'm ok) but the land is generally damp and then obviously gets worse when it rains.

With this in mind what will grow ok?

Not many plants can cope with really waterlogged soil - take your cue from what those around you have done and are growing (if they have put in extra drainage and/or created raised beds of some description you may have to consider doing likewise.)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I find sweet peppers appreciate damp soil, and celery definitely loves it.

If you're worried your soil is too boggy, them build up mounds that you plant into. This way the roots have a drier area and if they need moisture, they can spread into the lower damper areas. Rather like raised beds.

WEEDS - they grow OK everywhere

Rule of thumb

If it dies dispite all your TLC then its a plant
If it grows without any TLC then it's a weed

More instant results come from digging in sharp grit with your manure.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Try ridging the soil. About 4in high ridges should be ok. Makes weeding a lot easier too.
