Raised beds and containers
« on: March 01, 2013, 01:13 »
i have got some raised beds out in my garden too 1m sq and about a 1ft high..any help as to what i can grow in these. i also made some containers out of really strong wire mesh fencing i had, bent them in circles and covered outside with tarpauline and inside with tough plastic with holes in the bottom.
I was thinking of caulis, brocoloi, carrots, runner beans each to a bed and then potatoes in the containers???

They should work just fine, if thats what you want to grow :)

Cauliflowers are quite difficult to get right though, so it may be better to grow something easier and more cost effective. Salads and courgettes are always a good bet, but only if you like them  ;)

First of all with the space available, think about the things you like first, then work out your spacings.  There are loads of square foot gardening articles on the internet,  here is one which gives you an idea of what will go into each square foot of space.

Things like caulis need a lot of room unless you go for the mini types.  I grew minicole cabbages last year for the first time, and they were lovely.  Really tight balls of cabbage.  one of them lasted 2 of us 2 days.

Here's the one I was thinking of first.

hi and thanks for the spacing info could prove very usefull as im quite new to attempting to grow veg properly i think maybe i will forget caulis this year and maybe as i have these raised beds a metre square i might put one type of veg in each as you say something i like which is pretty much everything but im thinking one bed for carrots, one for parsnips, one for onions and either one for potatoes or runners not quite sure yet. Somebody mentioned that root veg arent too keen on manured soil is this correct??

The general advice is not to manure where carrots / parsnips are to go, although some members report that they don't have a problem if they do do so.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

As long as the manure is not in hard lumps then you should be ok.
