Plant ID please :)
« on: February 21, 2013, 16:04 »
Hi all, my first post so please excuse my naivety!

Went to see our new allotment plot today. Quite lovely although a bit nervous as its my first one!

Quite a few nice freebies already in.. Masses of raspberry canes, a huge head if rhubarb is starting to show itself too.

There's quite a lot of the plant below, but I don't know what it is. The top looks leeky, but it's not a bulb it's a rhizome.  I wonder if anyone could help with an ID?

Many thanks!

Looks like a day lily perhaps?

Cooool :) thanks for that. A quick google and that looks spot on.  I've got quite a bit of it so I might move them into the garden, need a bit of bulk in a few places so that'll be ideal.

Cheers all!  :)

You can eat the flowers of day lily so that may be why it was on your plot.  They are a fairly subtle flavour but a nice crunchy texture  :)

Pretty too as an ornamental plant  :)

I used to get laughed at for eating lily flowers. People thought I was mad.

There's tons of it, so I might split it up and have some on the plot and in the garden.

They will make a nice show come the summer  :)

Interesting what folk inherit on their plots

I just got stones, and stones, more stones.... and now I have, yes, more stones

but I had free hardcore for thr shed base and the hard patio at the end of the plot, as well as plenty to put along the bases of the fences to deter rabbits from digging their way in  :D

I've got quite a lot of stone, and lots of weed roots :) but I also have a humongous clump of rhubarb which I'm going to split.  Is it too late to do that now?

I also have masses of raspberry canes which I need to learn what to do with :) I feel very lucky as we wanted raspberries anyway.
