Globe or Cardoon
« on: February 17, 2013, 19:47 »
Hi
We have recently got an allotment that had been used but had been left for a while.  There is a Cardoon or Globe Artichoke area (old stems in situ just) how do we know which plant it is as they look similar but have to be dealt with differently.
Thanks :)

Probably Globe Artichokes.

Cardoons, although they have supposedly edible stems, are really a decorative plant.

Let it grow to find out. Both make nice plants.

Hello

I think I have found a globe artichoke or cardoon growing on a weedy patch of our allotment - can anyone help identify this from the picture?

Am I just trying to save another weed?!

Thanks

Emily

I had the globe artichoke or cardoon problem when I took my plot. It turned out to be a six foot tall cardoon (artichokes don't grow anywhere near that big) eventually I dug it out, but if you've room for it the flowers are the best bee attractant I've ever seen!

My cardoon grows overwinter rather than starting in spring so I'd say it is a globe.
