The murphys from CPL has so far been used for sowing and topping up the greenhiuse borders. Things are germinating fine but there is a lot of fungal growth for some reason. I have parsnips in loo roll tubes and there are more fungi than snips at the moment. At first I thought it was the tubes but then the greenhouse borders developed a fine covering of wispy white fluff too, though not the actually toadstool type growths the tubes got. I gave it all a quick turn over and it seems to have gone and not come back in over a week.

Toms, pepper, chillis and brassicas are all doing fine in it so far.

Just opened one and its pretty wet and smells a bit pongy. Used some last year and seemed ok.

I buy Grow-sure seed and cuttings compost.

Formally 'Surestart'  made by Westland (so if you buy the Surestart make - it may be last years - be warned if you don't like buying old compost).

Nice and sandy, a few twiggy bits at times but easily picked out. It can clump, but easily crumbles.
Recommended. Never had a bad bag yet. :)

I had a lot of fungas gnats in Verve MPC which was a sealed pack. I'm glad I only bought the one, but it meant the peppers I was overwintering were thrown outside  >:(

I'm not impressed with verve, collected some nasties and lost a pile of seedlings (not lost in other compost) so I won't be using that again  :(

Bought 9 x 60 Litre sacks of Humax Multipurpose at £5 a sack. It's what I buy every year and apart from being frozen solid, it seems to be fine

Just bought my second batch of new Horizon peat free multipurpose.  A few big twigs in it this time, but otherwise a really good texture and so far things are growing well in it. Also bought some Westland orchid compost and my Pleione has actually STARTED GROWING in it and looks really healthy!!! (Excuse the excitement - not been very successful in the past due to - I think - the wrong compost among other things)

I'm not that impressed with verve but as I've already bought it I will use it. I will keep an eye on this thread to see which I should go for next.

Copied from page 1
Please only post about compost you have actually purchased this year and whether it appears to be good quality (or otherwise.)

The quality of bought composts has been very inconsistent in the last few years so we need opinions about the most up-to-date samples for this thread to be of any value.

Have Levington fs2 seed compost and Levington m2 and m3 for potting on. The seed compost is wonderfully fine but also fluffy and not too heavy as some can be. Has added silver sand so drainage excellent also.
Have potted tomatoes, chillies and loofahs into the m2 which again is of lovely texture, I put it through a coarse riddle to break any compaction lumps down and can honestly say I have found NO lumps of bark or anything other than really nice compost.
Plants are thriving and fully recommended.

Homebase grow bags are the only compost I've found fine and cheap enough for seedlings the last few years

Asda compost .... 3 (70l bags) for a £10 and there is a reason ... its rubbish, very fibrous and a few twigs! going to use it for potting on and around the fruit bushes when the ground warms up a bit
