I have loads and always have grown them. Even back in Zimbabwe before we moved to the UK..

If anyone wants some to grow please pm me..

I also bought some different variety seed recently here - http://www.seedparade.co.uk/products/Onion_Spring_Ishikura_500_seeds-347-1.html
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

Hi. Your 'different seed variety' has exactly the same name as the variety I've just bought from here. Surely all 'welsh onions' are the same?

You can get red and white varieties of 'Welsh' / bunching onions'

gavin's link shows Ishikura a white bunching onion I've grown - your link is for red Welsh onions so you shouldn't have Ishikura

Well, I also bought some of these, from the same supplier. Are these the correct ones?

Actually, perhaps it's that there are different varieties of bunching onions. Welsh onions are one variety, Ishikura is another. Correct?

So you have the red and the white  :)

The ishikuri made nice hardy spring onions but they didn't seem the same thing as the Welsh onions in my garden, although they're probably just different varieties.

Wiki thinks they are  ;)

Thanks.

Just wanted to confirm that I've bought the correct ones. I'll give them a try this spring (or maybe put them in pots soon as they arrive and plant out later as a clump).

I'll try to remember to come back on this thread with my results - perhaps this time next year?

really interesting to read this thread - I love leeks / chives etc.. and have some heritage Babbington leeks in my garden (they are slightly garlicky, very delicious).

I was intrigued about the welsh red everlasting onion after reading about it here. I just found this onion here that seems to be what the original poster was looking for - a red everlasting onion:

http://www.seedaholic.com/onion-welsh-red-stem-japanese-bunching-negi.html

I also bought some some of the white Japanese allium fistulosum (Thomson + Morgan) as a substitute for the Calcotts I ate recently when I was lucky enough to be in the Pyrenees. If you leave them in the ground and earth them up, they become like leeks - yummy!

I had a clump on my plot when I first 'inherited' it.

They were lovely tasting onions, like a spring oniony bottom and a chive on top - 2 uses for the price of one.

They vanished sometime over my second winter on the lottie so presumably they ran out of energy and died off.
