hi all i have just bought a gooseberry plant from b&m for a pound shall i plant it in a big pot and grow it on and plant next spring or plant straight on the allotment

They're pretty hardy, so I would see no benefit in keeping it in a pot. It should establish better and be more drought tolerant in the ground.

If you have the space already prepared on the plot, and it is neither waterlogged nor frozen, I'd get it into the plot.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
