gooseberry fly
« on: June 20, 2015, 18:16 »
One bush already decimated. It is full of fruits. What shall I do?
Will the fruit be ok this season?

They have also moved to a currant bush. Sprayed with water/soap and they have fallen down and have killed some.
If I continue the above, would it be possible to solve this?
The bushes are quite big so if i prune the lower branches would it be easier to kill them? (I can also add some kind of sealing tape in the bottom then).

I use Provado Ultimate Bug Killer when these appear. This is systemic, so even the caterpillars not directly sprayed will die.

It is safe to use on gooseberry bushes and will not harm the fruit. It will tell you on the label how long to wait before harvesting.

If you can clear the infestation, you should reduce the chance of them appearing again next year: the caterpillars overwinter as pupae in the ground, so none left means no new moths next year!

Probably will do this. At least even if the fruits are eated this year, the bush will be ok for next year..

When are usually the gooseberries ready? Is it not in the next weeks?

The caterpillars only eat the leaves, not the fruit.

You can start picking the fruit now to make some tasty tart tarts. Thin the fruit out as you pick so the others will grow bigger.

Provado bottle says 3 days harvest interval between spraying and eating so perhaps pick some and then spray.
