first earlies followed by main crop potatoes
« on: January 31, 2013, 17:29 »
Just wanted to double check if the following is OK.  I am planning to grow some first, second and main crop potatoes if possible.
I was thinking that I could start the earlies in my raised bed, plant my second earlies in containers, then, hopefully once the earlies are harvested, replace with the main crop.
My question is can I plant the mains in the soil which the earlies have been in, or is this asking for trouble?, ie disease etc.

Main crop potatoes need a longer growing season.

Earlies are not called that because they are planted early,  but they crop early. All are planted at round about the same time.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

What DD said. If you wait till your earlies are lifted before planting the mains they won't have time to produce a decent crop. They will also be growing when the blight season is in full swing.

I have done well with both early peas and turnips after first earlies . And have also used the space to plant out wallflowers to grow on .
I cook therefore I grow

Leeks, sown earlier in the year and grown on ready to transplant - usually works, but not last year when the early spuds were much later than expected due to the weather!  :nowink:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Peas!

Or you can dibble your leeks in, or plant spring cabbage later.

Blue pellets of death!

They're usually OK as they go out as decent plants later in the year.

Thanks for all your imput guys. Looks like I'll need a rethink. I'll obviously need to decide which one to put in the bed and which to put in containers or bags.
First season growing in beds, as only previously done bits and bobs in containers,so dont want to try too many different things at once.
