Anyone used dried silt on their allotment or garden?

I hope this is in the right section I couldn't find anywhere else for it.

I am managing a project at the moment that involves de-silting a lagoon, which means there will be 100's of tons of dried silt to relocate.  I've been told by the company doing the work that it'll be great for gardens, allotments, etc, as it has around 40 years of rotted vegetation, fish remains, poo, etc.

I thought about trying some seeds in it to see how well they start off as it's fairly fine, like seed compost.

Has anyone any experience of using a similar material?  In essence it should be good for the lotty but my soil is fenland peaty stuff so I may not benefit too much,

Healthy freshwater we removed around 1000 carp before the work started in a 40m x 40m area!!!

Ok thanks any idea how it would need applying and uses?

Good for pots in the garden, hanging baskets, etc?  Maybe should have asked before I bought 3 bags of multi compost from B&Q today!!! 

Thanks for the info it's a pity the site is not more accessible as I've just worked out there's going to be approx 1600 tons sitting there for a while!!!

It'll keep me going for a bit though!! 

He can come and dump it in my garden if he likes!   

Sounds like good stuff.  Anyone with clay soil would benefit from something like that surely?

I think it would just make clay even more claggy, as silt is usually very fine particles.

But clay is very-very-very fine particle, so silt will improve it.   

10m x 10m plot with a 100mm layer on top @ say 1200kg/cu m = 12 tonnes

I wonder what the postage would be on that ??

Shame I am  too far away to help you with your research,as I would love to have some of this for the plot.

When it comes to the difference between silt and clay, size isn't everything - there are chemical differences too which give clay different physical properties from silt.

True, as a one time geotechnical engineer (before I got a life) I know only too well.

But they never taught me about the horticultural properties of silts and clays, so I missed out on the really useful stuff.
