Broad beans in pots - what to do next?
« on: January 21, 2013, 23:25 »
I missed the boat on autumn sown broad beans so stuck them (Aquadulce) in pots early this month. I didn't factor on sudden snow/permafrost in London, and they are coming up now.

I can't put them in the plot, which is still covered in snow, and I live in a flat - are they best off:
a) in the brightish but north-facing unheated kitchen?
b) on the cold landing by the balcony - also north-facing and near the builders who are putting a new lift into our block?
c) on the (1) sunny windowsill in the flat in a warm bedroom?

Thanks - I'm having a small brain freeze!

They won't mind what seems cold to you, it'll be warm to them. They need as much light as possible, so it sounds like option a) is  best.

Don't forget the aluminium foil!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I set mine off in November. The ones I put outside were about 6" high before the snow and cold. I still have a couple of dozen in pots in the greenhouse, and they have gone all limp and don't look at all happy. Time will tell if they pull round.

If got a similar situation to surbie100.
I've got loads of broad beans that have germinated and I had wanted to put them in the plot but the recent snow has put paid to that for a while. Will it be too cold to put them in an unheated greenhouse? I can do this is in stages moving them to a cool, east facing room before going to the greenhouse. They are currently on a windowsill in a study that has no heating within it, but draws warmth from the hallway /rest of the house that it opens onto. With the obligatory foil of course  :D
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

Mine are in pots in an unheated greenhouse and are thriving.  The lowest temperature so far in there has been -3.1oC.  Last year I planted them outside and lost them in the really cold snap (they went black) so I'm going to leave them in the greenhouse for a while yet.
No matter how many plants I have in my garden, I can always find room for one more.

Just done a broad bean inspection (autumn sown).
The ones outside have survived quite well, but are small compared to the ones I sowed in pots in the unheated GH. These are now producing their first flowers!!!

Are broad beans 'open pollinated' if that is the right term?
I am of a mind to put some in the greenhouse border and see what happens as I still haven't transplanted them outside and they really need to move to bigger pots otherwise.  Is it worth trying them in the border whilst the greenhouse is empty?

Mine really need something doing with them, and quickly. Trouble is, I'm averse to put them out and get them whacked by a frost. The way the weather is perfoming, I might manage to get them out about June/July!

Bit of a hijack but - I planted some outside in November under cloches which are doing well.  However should I have put some in pots inside before now?  I was planning to put some in pots in an unheated polytunnel this week, but is it too late?  First timer needs reassurance as your posts suggest I should have done this ages ago.   :(

You can still do it  ;)
After the cold snap they'll soon carch up.
