They need more than a wooden cane, as they put out more than one shoot.

I've got chicken wire along the sides of my greenhouse inside and I just let them ramble along that.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grow 2 at the end of my greenhouse, tying them to 8' canes and letting them ramble over the neighbouring toms... they do go everywhere!

What if I grow them directly in the ground? Can I grow them up a wigwam type structure? I'm just worried that if they grow along the ground they could be lying in the damp and rot.

yes they'll do better for growing up something. They don't always grip on as well as they should so be prepared for some tying up.. there is a lot of weight once the cucs form!

Mine did really well outside, and they were tied in to very sturdy mesh & supported by bean poles (pic below). I got 3 plants to 1m wide trellis. They did go across the ground too, but the cukes didn't rot or get attacked by slugs.

I grew mine up poles last year - i did have a heavy crop but it was a pain constantly having to tie them in - so going to try something different this year

We only grow cucumbers in the greenhouse - inside a tall blow away in the back corner. Once the cucumbers are ready to be planted up, the blow away is no longer needed for other seedlings.

Beth Alpha every year - two plants in pots.  We tie the blow away shelves onto the back and a cane tied up the middle.  One tie in when the plants reach the first shelf cross member .... and then they are left alone to scramble.  A reliable, lunch box sizes cropper in a small space in the greenhouse.

I do outdoor types in tubs on a couple of tables. They scramble along the tables and drip over the sides. I originally put a trellis behind the tubs but they were going towards the sun and didn't like being tied up.
Worked for me!

I just let my outdoor ones ramble along the ground.

I've never had any problems with slugs etc..

I just let my indoor cucumbers do what they want (die - no support required!)  :nowink:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I don't grow outdoor ones as I am sure the weather isn't good enough?
The ones in the greenhouse are planted directly into the greenhouse border and as they grow, tied in to a contraption that OH built. A sort of indoor Munty Frame. Works well for me.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

If you can't grow them in Kent, mine shouldn't grow here in the Midlands!

Try "Marketmore" - a really heavy cropper.
