Monsoon rain, we almost lost the back of the house!
« on: November 30, 2007, 09:04 »
Last week (while I was safely in the UK) there was a terrific storm that went on for ages on and off, in the end 120 litres per sq mtr fell in just 24 hours.  HUbby said the olive grove at teh back was a raging torrent of water as it rushed past out house.  He checked the next morning at first light and all looked ok, 2 days leter we discovered the end wall had lost it´s soil under the foundations as over 2 feet of soil had been washed away from the side of the house!
We have had the house repaired now, new underpinning of the foundations and a 3 foot deep ´patio´ of concrete with a very strong re-enforced brick wall built to retain the patio. so now we have a safe house.  And to think I was moaning we needed rain!

That'll teach you to moan about lack of rain!

I'm pleased everything is okay now Pamela, but a bit more cost you didn't realise you'd have!!!

We did think we would get a bill for thousands of euros fearing the worst- we think the bill will be about 900€ so not too bad.  The insurers say we have to claim through the Government at Sevilla (or Madrid) as it was an Act of God.... we are still waiting for the Government official to call us.  We have plenty of photos to show the man (or lady) of the damage.  It was lucky we only had a flat roof, the builder said had we got a sloping roof we would have lost the side of the house with the extra weight! And that would have meant my new kitchen gone!
11 days on and the ground is still very muddy, at least our well is almost full, it was almost empty before the storm.  The ditch that runs along the front of the house is now level, before we had dreadful trouble with the water laying and not flowing- the storm has made the ditch floor find the right level and it is clearing well :D  So every storm has a silver lining :D
Hope you are all ok and do not get any damage with the storms forecast for the UK this weekend.
