Green hellebores
« on: December 29, 2012, 09:29 »
Hi,

My white hellebores has gone green. It's in a pot with some annual verbena (which is still going). Should I not have mixed them?

Thanks,

Caroline

Its probably just gone over into seed production.  You can either deadhead, or leave the flowers to go green and form seed heads.

They self seed easily, so move the pot to where you want more to grow  :)

Hellebores have evolved a quirky feature, where the 'flower' is actually made of overgrown septals, rather than petals.

This means they are not genetically fixed to a colour like 'normal' plant flowers. Location, weather, soil conditions and age are just some of the factors which can effect the colour of the hellebore 'flower.'

Have you moved or replanted it in the last year? As that may explain the colour change.

And because they are sepal rather than petals, they naturally turn green to photosynthesise once seeds are set, reagrdless of their original colour  :)
