With Cobra, some good results reported above, plus some bad ones
.
I wonder whether it is local climate or local soil conditions affecting the crop, It seems very odd to me.

It is very interesting how the growing results from the same variety can be so different, as I said earlier this was the first year I had grown Cobra, mainly because I liked the Idea of a climbing variety but also the dwarf variety I grew the year before were really not good so I was very pleased when the cobra went mad and produced so many beans. Only thing I will say is I did start them in pots in the greenhouse  ;)

Mine too. I always start beans off in pots indoors.

My Beans ended up on the end of the Brassica bed this time due to lack of space as usual, and that was massively manured in the previous November. There could be so many things involved as we all know, and  now I've said they grew well for me I will probably fail myself next year

I am 10 miles north of Sheffield.
I grew blue lake this year with interesting results.

In ground very poor very few beans.
In a tub a good crop.
Same seed, grown in pots indoors and planted on same day.
I think the soil in the tub was drier and warmer than the ground which was the difference.

we had such a cold wet summer which meant cold wet soil french beans dont like.

Well I put my better crop down to more thorough soil prep. The area where I grew the Blauhilde was a new bit of ground, a bit compacted and lacking in organic matter. I didn`t have a lot of time to sort this before planting so it was really just bung them in and hope for the best.

The Cobra by contrast where in a bed that was green manured the previous summer (mustard dug in). Then planted  over a bean trench filled with kitchen waste.

You can see one of the wigwams on the pic.

My cobra out performed all of the runner varieties and appeared to cope with less sunshine and much more rain than usual. We loved them.

Soil? Old bean trench with a few barrow loads of compost added and mainly left to withstand the wet on their own. Continued cropping until quite late in the season down here.
Never keep your wish-bone where your back-bone ought to be.

I'm just curious, why not bush beans?  I grow Bush Blue Lake and just love them.  I get great yields and they have that great Blue Lake flavour.
I eat local because I can.

I've grown dwarf French beans in the past - also very successful. I planted out quite early under cloches - a good yield and flavour too if I remember rightly.

Climbing beans have the advantage, for me, that I find them easier to harvest and they seem to crop over a longer period but the last bit might be imagination.

Having the beans up off the ground also means less mud splater in wet weather so cleaner beans.  ;)
