Recommend me a climbing bean
« on: December 20, 2012, 23:57 »
My plot is in Sheffield. I've had little success with Blue Lake beans. My plot is pretty sheltered and frost free from late May onwards.

So, which variety of climbing bean should I grow in the frozen North (Midlands)?
Thanks

Andy

How many years have you tried BL beans?

What didn't go well with them?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

This year I did Blauhilde and Cosse Violette. Both were completely trouble free and gave me a huge crop. I'm in Wiltshire, not really sure how much difference there is between my weather and yours.

Cannot say what would go well in Sheffield because  have no trouble with runner beans.

But I have looked on the Mole Seed web site and they have quite a variety with disciptions

So you Might find what you are looking for there

On our windy allotment site the purple beans (they turn green when cooked) all seem better at coping with bad weather :)

I grew cobra climbing french beans this year, they were about 7ft tall and had loads of beans

 off them ,considering the weather.

 cheers Carl

I've always had far too many climbing beans in previous years.

Only one handful all summer this year!  >:(

This was my first year growing french beans, I have never seen so many beans and they just kept going and going. Variety, Cobra

Blue Lake last year was fantastic, this year a complete wash out.  I just put it down to the weather, and as I like them so much I will be trying them again now.

Oddly, Cobra have never done well for me either. I guess you're either a blue bean person or a green bean person :)

Grew Cobra this year and had a good crop in spite of the weather - not so good were the Blauhilde the year before.
