grape vine cuttings
« on: December 09, 2012, 20:36 »
My neighbour on the plot has said to take some cuttings from his vine.
I was going to take them today but at the extremes there was a powdery fungus from the leaves and was on the stem at some points.
Will the vine be ok to take cuttings from further down the vine?

Thanks

Downy mildew, powdery mildew, and grey mould are common on vines and can be controlled easily by fungicides. Just take the cuttings and strike as normal, as the growth develops in the spring dust with a fungicide. There is a thought that treating before the cutting has rooted inhibits rooting.

Take cuttings in February, three buds from well developed canes at least pencil thickness or thicker, cut bottom one just underneath the bud but very close and the top one just above the bud, put them into the soil pushed down to the middle bud, they should start to shoot about May time depending on the weather.

Hi Silky,
I have done the cuttings today and cut them they way you described. I put them upside down in a sand / compost mix for half of them (as per a couple of yout videos) and will pot on the other half in an unheated gh.

Thanks
